Solar PV friendly appliances
by Barry on Mar.31, 2012, under Ethical Consumerism
One of the problems I have found with solar PV is that you get a reasonable current (>500 watts) over several hours. Conversely, a number of appliances use a high power for a short time (kettle, cooker etc.). A lot of energy is exported, only to be imported in again later.
I have made two changes recently to achieve greater energy independence. Firstly, I obtained a second hand, unused and unloved slow cooker. This uses about 200 watts over a number of hours as opposed to a cooker which uses 2-4 kw for half an hour or so. Secondly, I have acquired a 1 litre 750 watt caravan kettle to replace the 1.7 litre 2.4 kw kettle. Don’t panic, I haven’t thrown it away!
It’s a go-slow revolution. Time for a nap!

Slow cookers are awesome, Jo has some great recipes. I love ours
Another benefit is because your meat gets cooked slowly, you don’t have to buy a fancy cut and it still comes out tender and juicy.
Yum!
